Harry and Meghan to Address EU Parliament on Social Media

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to speak before members of the European Parliament in Brussels regarding social media harms. The Duchess of Sussex previously addressed a memorial in Geneva, Switzerland, in May, where she described how “children today are being shaped by systems designed to capture attention at any cost: relentless algorithms, exploitative engagement, and endless exposure to harmful content that they are not seeking out.” She urged those in attendance to “speak up” and “demand better from the platforms shaping our children’s lives.” The event was a memorial for individuals who had suffered digital harm, emphasizing the need to address these issues.

The Duke of Sussex has also delivered talks on artificial intelligence, though events have not gone entirely to plan. During a recent appearance in New York, an autocue malfunction forced Harry to walk off stage midway before returning to finish the address. He stated that “we have spent years trying to loosen technology’s grip on children’s attention” and warned that “we cannot wait another decade to discover what happens when technology has a grip on their relationships.”
