Trans Rights Protest Halts Harry Potter Store Launch

In London, a small group of around 10 trans rights protesters disrupted the opening of a new Harry Potter store on Oxford Street, holding signs reading “Protect Trans Lives” and “Trans Rights Now” while using megaphones. Camera crews and onlookers gathered as the group blocked the pavement amid shoppers and traffic.

Wielding a cardboard handwritten placard, one demonstrator accused the shop of having “blood on your hands”. The demonstration, consisting of roughly 10 people, turned the store launch into a tense standoff, with activists refusing to move. Wizards Rest reported: “Trans protestors just turned up to the opening of the Harry Potter Oxford store opening and have begun disrupting the event!!” The protest continued as crowds filmed the confrontation. Police and security staff were in evidence, with large numbers of people also queueing to get into the shop.

The 21,000 sq ft store, located at The Ribbon near Oxford Circus, is spread across two floors and features a range of Harry Potter-themed attractions. These include a full-sized Knight Bus, a fictional dragon suspended above a recreation of Gringotts Bank, and a replica of the Leaky Cauldron.

The protest is the latest development in an ongoing controversy surrounding Harry Potter creator JK Rowling’s views on transgender rights. Rowling has repeatedly clashed with transgender activists over her criticism of gender identity policies, particularly the inclusion of transgender women in female-only spaces. She argues that biological sex should remain a distinct legal and social category, while critics accuse her of promoting anti-trans views and undermining transgender people’s rights.

In a recent statement on X, Rowling said, “I have never denied that people who call themselves trans exist and in the UK, they rightly have exactly the same rights as every other citizen.” She further elaborated, “What you want is for women to lose their sex-based rights to accommodate men who say they’re women. That’s the conflict.”

The store offers exclusive merchandise, including wands, clothing, and personalized Hogwarts robes, as well as food and drink such as Butterbeer and Butterbeer ice cream. It also features interactive experiences, including a Hogwarts house-sorting ceremony, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the wizarding world.
